Costa Rica Book Project - July 2006Osa Peninsula, Costa RicaFinishing up images for the Osa Book, July 2006
This was a short trip, but as usual with the Osa, very productive. I was able to connect with several Biologists that we will be profiling in the conservation chapter of the book. Let me start out with a big thank you to the Friends of the Osa Foundation for lending me a quad to get around and photograph the biologists. I could never have gotten as much done as I did without the transportation help. I traveled over to the northeastern part of the Osa to spend time with Botanists Reynaldo Aguilar Fernandez and Catherine V. Bainbridge. They have bought a beautiful piece of property where they can live and carry out their very important plant/environmental research. I also traveled to a finca (farm) north of Rio Pero to meet with biologist Tanya Hawley and learn about her interesting projects relating to frogs. Tanya works with several species of frogs including several in the Glass Frog family. These Glass Frogs are small to medium sized greenish frogs which become transparent when a light is shined through them... very cool! Like some other frogs, the males of certain Glass Frogs spend weeks sitting under a leaf guarding their egg masses before they hatch into tadpoles. Thanks to Tanya’s research assistant (will get name), I was also able to photograph some other frogs during the day... these included a non-poisonous, brown poison-dart-frog which happened to be carrying a dozen young tadpoles on his back! Like the Glass Frogs, males of some Poison-Dart-Frogs take care of their babies... Dads Rule!
As always, a big thank you to my good friends Phil and Kim Spier, owners of Bosque del Cabo, for their wonderful hospitality!
